Launched in 2001, the .NAME domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought 3rd-level domains remained running.
